Day 41 – 1 Samuel 20:1

1 Samuel 20:1 (KJV)

"And David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, What have I done? what is mine iniquity? and what is my sin before thy father, that he seeketh my life?"

(1 Samuel 20:1)

David "fled" He is not picking a fight. He is escaping danger. This is urgent flight, not self-defense. I should not stay in a place of needless danger just to prove something.

He came from. "Naioth in Ramah" David had been near Samuel and the company of the prophets. That teaches me something balanced. I can seek spiritual help and safety, but again I must not mistake it as a magic place where all burdens disappear. David still has to keep moving in the work and will of the Lord.

Where he goes. "and came and said before Jonathan" He goes to a faithful friend God already gave him. My commentary connects this to the covenant that was established earlier. David does not run to gossip. He runs to the right person for truth and help.

I notice David's questions are specific and how a normal innocent person would respond. "What have I done? what is mine iniquity? and what is my sin...?" The force of these words, David is declaring a clear conscience. He is not saying he is sinless in life, but he is saying he is not guilty of what Saul is hunting him for. A heart after God cares about a clean record in the matter at hand.

I see the painful end of the verse, "that he seeketh my life?" Saul is not just upset. He is pursuing David's soul, his very life. Unjust persecution is real, and sometimes it comes from powerful places. But David's first move is not revenge. It is humility, truth, and wise counsel.

David is not running from duty, he is running toward righteousness and safety so he can keep serving the Lord.

A great though has come to me from this scripture. When pressure rises, do I run to God first and keep obeying? And can I honestly ask, with a clear conscience, "What have I done?"
