Day 112 – 2 Samuel 8:15-18

2 Samuel 8:15-18
"And David reigned over all Israel; and David executed judgment and justice unto all his people."
(2 Samuel 8:15)
David has just come through a chapter of victories, Philistines, Moab, Syria, Edom. The LORD preserved David whithersoever he went. But after the battles, the Bible tells me the kind of king David was at home. He did not only conquer enemies outside the land, he governed rightly inside the land. "Judgment and justice" means David ruled with fairness, righteousness, order, and proper decisions. This was a king serving "all his people."
"And Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the host; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder;"
(2 Samuel 8:16)
Joab is over the host, meaning he is the commander of the army. Jehoshaphat is the recorder. In today's terms, this was like an official historian, records officer, or royal secretary who kept account of major events, government actions, and kingdom business.
"And Zadok the son of Ahitub, and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, were the priests; and Seraiah was the scribe;"
(2 Samuel 8:17)
Zadok and Ahimelech are named as priests. The things of the LORD must have their place in the national life of Israel. Seraiah is the scribe, who handled writing, official documents, legal records, and royal correspondence.
"And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over both the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David's sons were chief rulers."
(2 Samuel 8:18)
Benaiah is placed over the Cherethites and Pelethites. These were connected with David's personal guard or special military servants. This would be a royal security force or elite protective unit around the king. Then I see, "David's sons were chief rulers." This means they were placed in positions of high service and responsibility in the kingdom. There is a reference scripture that parallels this one.
"And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and the sons of David were chief about the king."
(1 Chronicles 18:17)
David's sons were not replacing the Levitical priesthood. They were serving in chief positions near the king. The Holy Spirit is pointing out the need to understand their role carefully because
David's sons were from Judah, not Levi. David brings order to the kingdom. He appoints military leadership, record keeping, priestly service, written administration, royal security, and chief rulers.
