Faithful at Seventeen

These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.

Scripture Review
Joseph enters the story at seventeen years old, feeding the flock with his brothers. Scripture does not introduce him in a palace or even in a place of influence. He is at work. The first thing recorded about him is that he brought his father their evil report. The text tells me what Joseph did, but it does not give me permission to invent a proud motive for him. A faithful report can be uncomfortable and still be necessary.
I also notice the family history in these opening verses. Jacob is dwelling in the land where his father was a stranger, and Joseph is serving among sons from different mothers. Old wounds, divided affections, and household tension are already in the room before the coat appears. God begins His work in a real family, not an ideal one. He is not limited by the disorder He finds when the chapter opens.
The brothers were doing evil, and whatever they hoped to keep within the field was carried home in a truthful report.
God was introducing the young man He would use. Joseph was a servant willing to work and to tell the truth before he could see where truthfulness would cost him.
What this asks of me
I should be careful both when giving a report and when receiving one. Truth must not become gossip, revenge, or a way to make myself look better. At the same time, peace is not preserved by hiding sin. Faithfulness begins in ordinary duties, often long before anyone recognizes where God is leading.

- Am I faithful with the ordinary work already in front of me?
- When I speak about another person’s wrongdoing, am I serving truth or serving myself?
