The Line Through Pharez

And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first.

And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, How hast thou broken forth? this breach be upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez.

Scripture Review
Tamar bears twins. During the birth one child puts out his hand, and the midwife marks it with a scarlet thread, yet Pharez breaks forth first. The chapter closes with Pharez and Zarah, two names that will continue beyond the shame surrounding their beginning. Human disorder does not destroy God’s promise, though it leaves real wounds and consequences.
The scarlet thread appeared to identify who would be first, but the outcome reversed expectation. Scripture repeatedly reminds me that God is not controlled by human custom, human labels, or the order I assume He must use. Pharez enters the genealogy of David and, generations later, of the Lord Jesus Christ according to the flesh. That does not make the sins of Genesis 38 necessary virtues. It shows that God’s grace is able to carry a holy promise through a broken family.
The people in Genesis 38 pursued desire, self-interest, concealment, and custom, leaving a family story no one could make clean by human effort.
God meant to preserve the promised line through Pharez and demonstrate that His grace can overcome a sinful history without approving the sin within it.
What this asks of me
I should neither romanticize a broken past nor treat it as sovereign over my future. The Lord tells the truth about where people came from and still calls them forward. A label placed by human expectation cannot limit God, but grace should lead me to humility, holiness, and gratitude instead of carelessness.

- Have I allowed my family history to define what I believe God can do?
- Do I use grace as a reason for holiness or as an excuse to take sin lightly?
