Begin with the Scripture
Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.
Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.
Acts 8:35 KJV
Philip did not treat the man's question as an interruption to the message he wanted to deliver. He listened, understood the passage being considered, and began there to speak about Jesus. Truthful teaching pays attention to the learner as well as the subject.
When you help someone understand the Bible, start with what the text says. Read enough of the passage to know its setting. Explain unfamiliar words without changing the quotation into something Scripture did not say. The purpose is understanding, not showing how much information you can fit into one conversation.
Keep Christ and the gospel clear. The Bible is not a collection of moral slogans detached from God's work of redemption. Jesus died for sinners and rose again, and each person needs to trust Him as Saviour.
You may be the one asking for help instead. That is a good and honest place to begin. Seek sound teachers who will open Scripture with you rather than demand that their opinion settle every matter. A careful explanation can help a familiar page become more clearly understood, and that understanding should lead toward personal faith and willing obedience.
Keep the passage in context
Philip begins with the passage the Ethiopian is reading and preaches Jesus to him. The account connects an honest question about Scripture with a clear explanation of Christ.
