Character before a Title

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.

Acts 6:3 KJV

A position can sound impressive before you understand the work behind it. Scripture directs attention toward the people who can be trusted with the responsibility. In Acts 6, practical care required honest character, wisdom, and dependence upon the Spirit.

You do not have to wait for a title to begin developing those qualities. Tell the truth about unfinished work. Handle borrowed property carefully. Learn to listen before deciding. Serve in a way that considers the actual needs of people rather than the attention the task might bring.

A good reputation should grow from truthful conduct, not careful image management. The Lord sees the parts of life other people cannot inspect. Let private choices agree with the person you appear to be in a group.

Seek growth in Christ instead of rushing to appear ready for every role. Useful leadership includes knowing when to ask for help and receiving correction without making it a personal battle. A title may arrive later or take a form you did not expect. Faithfulness in the responsibility already before you is valuable now, and it prepares you more soundly than a long list of ambitions.

Keep the passage in context

The church chooses men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, to oversee a practical need. Spiritual character matters in ordinary responsibilities as well as visible teaching roles.
