Belonging without the Performance

For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
Romans 8:15 KJV
Fear can make a person behave well for a while without producing the confidence of being loved. You may learn to watch every expression in the room and measure whether you have done enough to be accepted. Romans 8 teaches believers to understand their relationship with God through His saving grace.
The Spirit of adoption points to real belonging. Those in Christ can approach God as their Father. That privilege is grounded in the Saviour's work, not in a performance that must remain impressive every hour.
This confidence does not make obedience optional. A loving relationship gives obedience a better purpose. We seek to please the Father who has received us rather than trying to purchase a place He has not yet agreed to give.
Return to Scripture when anxious thoughts misrepresent His character. Be honest about sin, receive correction, and grow in dependence upon Him. God is holy, and His love is faithful. A believer can take both truths seriously without living as though every imperfect day places him back outside the door, waiting to earn permission to belong.
Keep the passage in context
Paul describes the Spirit of adoption received by believers. Their relationship with God is one of filial confidence through His grace rather than bondage to fear.
