Do Not Waste His Kindness

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?

Romans 2:4 KJV

A delayed consequence can be mistaken for permission. You repeat a wrong choice, nothing obvious happens, and you begin acting as though the problem has disappeared. Scripture teaches us to understand God's patience differently.

His goodness should lead us to repentance. The Lord is not approving sin because He has not brought immediate judgment. He is giving reason to turn toward Him honestly. We should receive that mercy with gratitude instead of using it to protect the habit we know is wrong.

Name the matter truthfully. Stop calling deliberate deceit a misunderstanding or cruelty a joke. Seek the help needed to change, and accept appropriate accountability. Repentance is more than regretting that a secret might eventually become public.

The gospel does not offer salvation as a prize for repairing yourself. Christ saves sinners by grace through faith. His saving grace also gives no encouragement to remain comfortable with sin. God's kindness is too good to despise. Let it bring you into the light today, while the next truthful step is clear and the opportunity to take it is still before you.

Keep the passage in context

Paul warns against despising God's goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering. God's kindness leads toward repentance rather than providing permission to continue in sin.
