Grace Does Not Leave a Bill

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

Romans 3:24 KJV

A gift stops looking like a gift when an invoice is hidden inside it. Some people hear the gospel as though Christ begins salvation and then leaves them to pay the remaining balance through religious effort. Romans describes justification as freely given by grace.

This does not mean salvation cost nothing. The cost was borne by the Saviour. Jesus gave His life for sinners and rose again. What we could never earn is received through faith in Him.

Good works matter in the life of a believer, but they belong as the fruit of grace. They are not installments paid to keep Christ's sacrifice from failing. Serve Him gladly, confess sin honestly, and depend upon His strength to grow.

When you feel tempted to build a case for why God should accept you, return to the gospel's foundation. Your achievements cannot replace Christ, and your need does not surprise Him. Grace directs attention away from boasting and toward the Redeemer. A thankful life has much good work to do, but it does that work from a place of dependence on the Saviour rather than under an imaginary bill for His gift.

Keep the passage in context

Paul teaches that justification is freely given by God's grace through redemption in Christ Jesus. Christ's saving work is the ground of acceptance before God.
