Faith Has Someone to Trust
Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.
For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.
Romans 4:3 KJV
People sometimes speak about faith as though its strength comes from believing very intensely in whatever outcome they prefer. Biblical faith has a trustworthy object. Abraham believed God. The value of his faith rested in the One who spoke.
Paul uses this truth to explain justification. A sinner is not made righteous by gathering enough accomplishments to impress the Lord. We depend upon God's provision in Christ rather than presenting our record as payment.
Read the promises of Scripture carefully. Know who received them and what they actually say. Faith does not improve a promise by stretching it into something God never offered. It honors Him by trusting His word with its true meaning.
You may feel strong one day and uncertain the next. Bring those changes honestly before the Lord and return to His truth. Confidence grows on a sound foundation when we learn more of His character and saving work. The important matter is not whether we can manufacture a powerful feeling. It is whether our trust rests in the faithful God and the Saviour He has given.
Keep the passage in context
Paul uses Abraham's belief in God to explain righteousness counted through faith rather than earned by works. The passage challenges boasting in personal performance.
