Hope Without Pretending

Some encouragement sounds as though you must describe a painful situation positively before you can have faith. Lamentations gives a more honest picture. Grief is real, and God's mercy is real within it.

The writer does not praise an easy life. He remembers the LORD's unfailing compassions amid loss. Faithfulness belongs to God's character; it is not a prize earned by keeping a cheerful expression.

You can speak honestly about sadness and seek help from trusted people. You can also recognize mercy without claiming that every question has been answered. A person who sits with you, a needed meal, and strength for a difficult responsibility can matter greatly. Let hope rest in God rather than in your ability to make the whole week sound good.
