Lay Down What Keeps Getting in the Way
Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.
Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
Hebrews 12:1 KJV
Not every thing that slows you down looks terrible at first. A harmless activity can consume the time you need for sleep, responsibilities, or attention to Scripture. A habit of checking every notification can make quiet concentration feel almost impossible.
Hebrews distinguishes between weight and sin. Sin must be confessed and forsaken. Other things may need to be limited because they interfere with faithful living, even when the activity itself is not forbidden.
Be honest about the effect a habit is having. Ask a parent or trusted adult to help you establish sensible boundaries. A practical limit is often more useful than repeatedly announcing that you intend to try harder. You do not have to prove that everyone else needs the same boundary before accepting one that helps you.
The Christian life requires patience. There are daily steps, repeated choices, and progress that is difficult to measure quickly. Keep your attention on Jesus rather than comparing your pace with someone else's. Laying down a needless weight gives you room to attend to the responsibilities and relationships the Lord has placed before you.
Keep the passage in context
Following the examples of faith in chapter 11, believers are urged to lay aside hindrances and sin and run with patience. The next verse directs their attention to Jesus.
