Faith Has a Firm Foundation

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Hebrews 11:1 KJV

Faith is sometimes described as believing hard enough that a desired outcome will happen. That idea puts the weight on the strength of your feelings. Biblical faith rests on the trustworthiness of God and what He has actually said.

The people in Hebrews 11 did not all receive comfortable lives or immediate answers. Some saw remarkable deliverance; others suffered while remaining faithful. Their confidence was not a guarantee that every circumstance would follow their preference.

Learn the difference between a promise in Scripture and a wish you deeply want fulfilled. You can bring your wishes to the Lord while trusting Him with the result. Do not claim that He has promised something simply because you can picture it vividly.

Faith becomes practical through obedience. Tell the truth when dishonesty looks easier. Follow the Lord's instruction when the immediate benefit is not obvious. Trust Christ's finished work for salvation instead of trying to earn acceptance. You do not need to manufacture a feeling of certainty about every detail ahead. You need a faithful God, and He has made Himself known in His Word.

Keep the passage in context

Hebrews introduces examples of people who trusted God's promises. Biblical faith rests upon what God has revealed, even when its fulfillment is not yet visible.
