Stay Close with a Settled Purpose

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord.

Acts 11:23 KJV

Good intentions can become vague when they never reach a settled choice. You want to grow in Christ, but Bible reading waits until nothing else is happening, fellowship depends on convenience, and obedience is postponed whenever it becomes uncomfortable.

Barnabas encouraged believers to cleave to the Lord with purpose of heart. The direction was personal and steady. God's grace had begun a good work among them, and they needed to continue in dependence upon Him.

Choose practical habits that make room for the truth you say matters. Read a manageable passage attentively. Take part in sound church teaching. Seek help with a recurring temptation before the next failure becomes another secret. These habits do not purchase God's favor; they are ways of responding to His grace.

A settled purpose does not mean you will never be tired, distracted, or uncertain. It means those conditions do not receive automatic permission to decide the course of your life. Return to the Lord's truth when you stumble and keep taking the next faithful step. The person you become is shaped through many ordinary returns to what you have decided is worth holding closely.

Keep the passage in context

Barnabas encourages the believers at Antioch to cleave to the Lord with purpose of heart. His encouragement follows his glad recognition of God's grace among them.
