The Saviour Who Sat Down

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

Hebrews 1:3 KJV

A finished assignment can still leave you wondering whether you have done enough. Salvation rests on a better foundation than that uneasy feeling. Hebrews directs our attention to Jesus Christ, who accomplished the work sinners could never accomplish for themselves.

The Son did not become glorious because people approved of Him. He reveals the Father and upholds all things by His power. The One who died for our sins is the eternal Lord, fully qualified to save and worthy of our trust.

His sitting down does not mean He has become uninterested in His people. It points to the completion and acceptance of His sacrifice. We do not add our religious effort as though the cross left a balance for us to pay.

Good works belong in a believer's life as the fruit of salvation. They do not purchase it. When you feel pressure to make yourself acceptable to God, return to what Christ has done. Trust Him, thank Him, and obey from that settled foundation. The Christian life begins with a sufficient Saviour, and growth never requires replacing Him with confidence in your own performance.

Keep the passage in context

Hebrews opens by declaring the glory of the Son and the sufficiency of His work. His seated position follows His purging of sins and expresses His exalted authority.
