The Person Who Seems Less Important

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary:

1 Corinthians 12:22 KJV

A group can develop an unofficial ranking without ever writing it down. Certain people receive attention quickly, while others are noticed only when someone needs an extra chair or a forgotten task completed.

Paul's picture of the body challenges that way of thinking. A part does not become unnecessary because it is less visible. God has arranged His people to serve together, and the church needs more than the abilities that attract immediate applause.

Be careful about how you treat someone who seems quiet, awkward, younger, older, or less able to join a particular activity. Respect is not a prize reserved for people who entertain you. Learn names, make appropriate room, and value the contribution you may not fully understand.

Apply the same truth to yourself. You do not have to become someone else before you can serve usefully. Develop the abilities and opportunities the Lord has given you under wise guidance. A small responsibility done faithfully can benefit the whole group. Christian fellowship becomes healthier when people stop competing to appear necessary and begin appreciating the real care and service that others provide.

Keep the passage in context

Paul compares the church to a body and explains that members who appear weaker are necessary. Spiritual usefulness is not measured by public visibility or human status.
