Your Body Belongs to the Lord

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 KJV

The way you treat your body matters to the Lord. It is not an unimportant shell disconnected from your spiritual life. Scripture teaches believers that they belong to Christ and should honor Him with their physical lives.

The immediate setting concerns sexual sin, and we should not soften that warning. God calls His people to purity. This includes what they do, what they willingly view, and how they respect other people's bodies and boundaries.

You should also remember that being bought by Christ does not give another person ownership over you. No one may use religious language to pressure you into sexual behavior, unwanted touching, or secrecy about abuse. Tell a safe adult and seek protection if that happens.

Care for your body with gratitude rather than shame or pride. Rest, nourishment, sensible activity, and appropriate medical care are ordinary responsibilities. Physical appearance does not determine your worth. For the believer, the central truth is belonging to the Saviour who paid the price of redemption. Let that belonging guide choices that honor Him and protect the dignity He has given you.

Keep the passage in context

Paul addresses sexual immorality by reminding believers that the Holy Ghost dwells in them and that they were bought with a price. Their bodies are to glorify God.
