The Battery Lamp

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

Matthew 5:14 KJV

This is an original fictional illustration, not a historical report or an added Bible event.

When the electricity went off, the hallway became very dark. Elliot's little brother stood near the bedroom door and called for Mother. Elliot had a battery lamp beside his bed, but he was using it to look at a comic.

He could hear his brother moving slowly along the wall. Elliot put down the comic, switched the lamp to its brighter setting, and carried it into the hallway. He stayed away from the stairs until Mother came to help.

The small circle of light showed a toy truck in the middle of the floor. Elliot picked it up, then stood near his brother while Mother found another lamp. Together they carried blankets to the sitting room.

For the next half hour they played a word game beside the lights. Elliot's brother stopped looking frightened and began suggesting funny animal names. When the electricity returned, everyone blinked at the bright ceiling lamp.

Elliot brought his battery lamp back to the bedroom. His comic was still waiting exactly where he had left it. Sharing the light had interrupted his reading for a while, but it had helped someone who needed it more.

Jesus calls His followers the light of the world. We show His truth through honest words and loving actions. Elliot's lamp gave real light in a dark hallway. Our choices can also help others see kindness instead of being left alone with their trouble.

For the grown-up reading along

Jesus describes His disciples as the light of the world. Their lives should make God's goodness visible rather than hide it through careless or dishonest conduct.
