The Story Nobody Checked

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.

Proverbs 26:20 KJV

This is an original fictional illustration, not a historical report or an added Bible event.

At lunchtime, someone told Clara that a boy in her class had hidden the teacher's whistle. Clara had not seen him take it. She had only seen him near the desk before the lesson.

She repeated the story to two friends. Soon several children were whispering when the boy walked past. He looked confused and sat by himself with his lunch box.

After lunch, the teacher found the whistle inside her own coat pocket. She had put it there before going outside. Clara felt her stomach sink. The story she helped spread was wrong, and the boy had heard the whispering.

Clara told the teacher what she had repeated. Then she spoke to the two friends who heard it from her. She explained that she had not checked the story and that the whistle had never been taken. She apologized to the boy without asking him to pretend it had not hurt.

The next day another rumor began near the playground gate. Clara did not carry it farther. She said that guessing was not the same as knowing and went to ask the teacher about the actual problem.

God's Word warns that gossip keeps trouble burning. We can refuse to add fuel. Clara could not pull every whispered word back into her mouth, but she could tell the truth where she had spread a lie and choose more carefully next time.

For the grown-up reading along

Proverbs compares gossip to fuel on a fire. Passing along harmful talk can keep a quarrel alive when silence and truth would help it end.

Read the KJV passage aloud. Explain unfamiliar words in ordinary language without changing the quotation.
