The Birdseed Bag

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.

2 Corinthians 9:7 KJV

This is an original fictional illustration, not a historical report or an added Bible event.

Lucy had saved a small bag of birdseed for the feeder outside her window. She liked watching sparrows land on the narrow perch. One morning her neighbor mentioned that her own feeder was empty and she could not get to the shop that week.

Mother suggested that Lucy could share some seed. Lucy held the bag close. She had been saving it for her own birds, and she did not want to give half away just because someone was watching.

Mother told her to think carefully and make an honest choice. Later Lucy stood at the window. A sparrow flew from their fence toward the neighbor's garden and searched the empty feeder. Lucy watched it return to the hedge.

She took a clean container from the cupboard and measured some seed into it. There was still enough in her bag for another refill. With Mother's help, she carried the container next door and explained what it was for.

The neighbor thanked her and showed her where the robins liked to feed. Lucy did not know which garden the birds would visit next. She was glad there would be food in both places.

God loves a cheerful giver. Giving is more than moving something from one hand to another while keeping a bitter heart. Lucy took time to notice a need and chose to share. Her small gift became a willing act of kindness.

For the grown-up reading along

Paul encourages willing generosity in a collection for believers in need. God values a cheerful giver rather than giving driven by pressure or resentment.
