The Wrong Puzzle Piece

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

Proverbs 14:12 KJV

This is an original fictional illustration, not a historical report or an added Bible event.

Nathan was finishing a puzzle of a lighthouse. He had one piece that seemed almost right for the blue sky. He pressed it into an empty space, but one edge stuck up.

His sister suggested trying it near the sea. Nathan shook his head. He was sure the color belonged in the sky. He pushed harder until the cardboard bent a little. The next piece would not fit beside it at all.

Dad sat down at the table. He turned the box so Nathan could see the picture clearly. Then he helped him lift out the bent piece without tearing it. A tiny white shape on its edge matched the foam beside a rock.

Nathan placed it near the sea. It slipped into the right space easily. The piece that belonged in the sky had been under the box lid. Once he found it, the whole top row came together.

Nathan apologized to his sister for refusing to listen. They finished the lighthouse before supper and put the box picture beside their completed puzzle.

Feeling sure does not always mean we are right. God gives us His Word so that our choices can be guided by truth. When Scripture corrects us, we should listen instead of pressing harder on a wrong idea. Nathan could change where he put a puzzle piece. We can also admit a mistake and take the right next step.

For the grown-up reading along

Proverbs warns that a way may appear right while leading to destruction. Our confidence must be corrected by God's truth rather than treated as proof that we are right.
