The Extra Place Mat

The family had four place mats on the table when Dad called from the door. Their new neighbor had stopped by, and Mom invited him to share supper. Lily went to the drawer for another place mat.
She moved her cup a little and made room for his chair. During the meal, she told him where the park was and listened when he described his old town. He did not stay long, but he was no longer a stranger at the end of supper.
The Bible teaches believers to welcome one another because Christ has welcomed them. Lily did not need a bigger house to help. She could move a cup, bring another place mat, and make sure the person beside her had room to belong at the table.
A small step for today
A new child may not know where to sit or how the group works. Make room and explain kindly. Paul teaches believers to receive one another as Christ received them. Welcome should be more than a word at the door. It can include learning a name, sharing a place, and helping someone feel noticed.
For the grown-up reading along
Paul calls believers to receive one another in view of Christ's welcome, within a discussion of unity among Jewish and Gentile believers. Receiving others does not mean approving sin.
