The Hill beyond the House

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.

At the top of the hill, Thomas could see the roofs of his town. The houses looked small, and the road curved farther than he had expected. He held his mother's hand while they looked across the valley.
That evening, they read Psalm 121. His mother explained that the psalmist's help came from the Lord, not from the hills. God had made the whole view Thomas had enjoyed, including the sky above it.
Thomas still needed help with ordinary things. He needed someone to reach the high shelf and teach him difficult words. The psalm helped him remember the greatest Helper. The Lord who made heaven and earth was worthy of trust in the little house at the bottom of the hill as well as on the path above it.
A small step for today
The psalm points to the Lord as the source of help. He made heaven and earth. Look beyond the size of the problem and remember who He is. Tell a trusted grown-up what you need, and receive the help offered. God can care for us through people who know how to guide, protect, and encourage us.
