A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished.
Proverbs 27:12 KJV
This is an original fictional illustration, not a historical report or an added Bible event.
The garden gate had a latch that sometimes missed its catch. When Daniel hurried through, it looked closed even though the wind could push it open. Their dog Pip liked to wait near that gate.
Dad asked Daniel to give the gate a gentle pull after closing it. Daniel thought the extra check was unnecessary. He had shut it as hard as he could, so he ran inside without trying the latch.
A little later, Mother saw Pip sniffing near the open gate. She called him back before he reached the pavement. Daniel came outside and saw the latch hanging above its catch. He knew that slamming the gate had not made it secure.
Dad showed him how to lift the latch slightly and let it drop into place. Then Daniel pulled the gate to check it. They practised twice until he could feel the difference between a gate that looked closed and one that stayed closed.
For the rest of the week Daniel made the small check whenever he came in. Pip still waited nearby, and the latch still needed attention. Daniel's habit helped keep the garden safer.
God's Word teaches us to notice danger and respond wisely. Taking care is not the same as being afraid of everything. Sometimes wisdom is a simple action that protects someone else. Daniel learned that one gentle pull could be more useful than the loudest slam.
For the grown-up reading along
Proverbs commends noticing danger and taking wise shelter. Thoughtful care is different from walking into trouble because we refuse to pay attention.
