Charlotte saw a note in her brother's bag and told Mom that he must be in trouble. Her brother tried to explain, but she kept talking. Mom asked Charlotte to wait and let him finish.
The note said he had been chosen to help with the school garden. He was excited and wanted to show them the little drawing at the bottom. Charlotte apologized for deciding the story before hearing it.
James teaches us to be quick to listen and slow to speak. Charlotte's brother had something good to share, and her hurry had nearly spoiled it. She sat beside him while he explained which seeds the class would plant. Listening gave her the true story and gave him room to enjoy telling it.
A small step for today
Let the other person finish speaking. Take a moment before answering, especially when you feel angry. A quick, loud reply may make the problem harder. You can explain your concern with calm words. If you need help, ask for it. Listening and slowing down give you time to choose a response that does not hurt someone.
For the grown-up reading along
James calls believers to receive God's word with a teachable spirit. Human anger does not accomplish God's righteousness, so listening and restrained speech belong with obedient reception of the truth.
