A Teacher Worth Following

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

Matthew 11:29 KJV

Some people make learning harder by treating every mistake as a reason for embarrassment. Jesus describes Himself as meek and lowly in heart. His authority is real, and His gentleness is real too. We do not have to choose one truth at the expense of the other.

Coming to Christ does not mean He will approve every habit we want to keep. Learning from Him includes receiving correction and following His way. The comfort is that the Saviour calls needy people to Himself rather than demanding that they become impressive before they approach.

Trust Him personally and give careful attention to His Word. When you do not understand a passage, seek sound help instead of pretending. When it shows a wrong choice, respond honestly rather than hiding behind excuses.

You can also learn from Christ's gentleness when helping someone else. Explain patiently, refuse mockery, and remember how much you still need to learn. A willing learner and a kind helper are both better companions than a person who must always appear to know everything already.

Keep the passage in context

Jesus calls burdened people to come to Him and learn from Him. His meekness and lowliness reveal the character of the Saviour whose yoke His followers receive.
