The Words after the Lesson
Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.
But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
Matthew 12:36 KJV
It is possible to speak respectfully during a Bible lesson and become careless as soon as the group leaves the room. A cruel joke, a false story, or an insulting message still matters when the lesson is over. The Lord hears the conversation in the hallway too.
Jesus' words should make us thoughtful, not eager to pretend we never make mistakes. Our need for forgiveness is real. We come to Christ as sinners and learn to bring our speech under His truth.
Notice the purpose of what you are about to say. A sentence may be technically accurate and still chosen only to embarrass someone. Another sentence may sound pleasant while hiding an intended deception. God knows the heart behind both.
Speak the truth in a way that serves a good purpose. Correct a wrong statement when you discover it, and apologize when your words have injured someone. The habits you practise in ordinary conversation are part of the life you are living before the Lord. A careful tongue belongs beside a well-marked Bible.
Keep the passage in context
Jesus teaches the seriousness of our words and connects speech with the heart. Careless talk is accountable before God rather than dismissed as something without moral weight.
