Giving without Keeping a Spotlight

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.

Matthew 6:3-4 KJV

An act of kindness can become crowded with thoughts about ourselves. We begin by noticing a need, then start imagining the compliments that might follow. Jesus' instruction helps us bring the purpose of giving back before the Father.

It is possible to organize a public collection responsibly and explain its needs clearly. The warning is against making generosity a performance whose real aim is admiration. A person receiving help should not have to become part of our publicity.

Give thoughtfully, with the permission and guidance appropriate to your age. Find out what is useful instead of assuming that a large or expensive gift is always the best one. Respect people's privacy and let the help reach them without demanding a story in return.

When no special thanks comes, remember why you gave. The Lord sees what others may overlook. Kindness does not become wasted because your name is absent from an announcement. A quiet gift can do real good, and learning to be content with that result is part of growing in sincere love.

Keep the passage in context

Jesus teaches generosity before the Father rather than giving performed to win human praise. The giver's purpose matters as well as the outward act.
