Receiving a Good Gift Well

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

James 1:17 KJV

A good gift can be received carelessly. We enjoy an ability without thinking about the One who gave it, or accept daily care while acting as though it is simply owed to us. James turns our attention toward the Father.

The surrounding passage makes clear that God is not the source of temptation to evil. We should not blame Him for a sinful desire we choose to follow. His character is good and dependable, even when our own desires and circumstances change.

Thank Him for the good He provides, including gifts that have become so familiar you barely notice them. Use your abilities responsibly. A quick mind can help someone learn or invent a clever excuse. A strong voice can encourage a group or embarrass a quieter person. The gift deserves a good purpose.

Gratitude is more than a pleasant sentence after receiving something. It can shape the way you use what is already in your hands. Remember the Giver, care for the gift, and let its usefulness reach beyond your own enjoyment to the people the Lord places near you.

Keep the passage in context

James distinguishes God's goodness from temptation to evil and describes every good and perfect gift as coming from the Father. His faithful character does not shift like changing shadows.
