Looking toward the Finisher
Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.
Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Hebrews 12:2 KJV
Looking constantly at yourself can become exhausting. One moment you are proud of progress, and the next you are discouraged by a failure. Hebrews directs believers toward Jesus, the author and finisher of their faith.
The passage does not ask us to ignore our conduct. The surrounding verses call for laying aside sin and running with patience. The point is that endurance needs the right focus. Christ's suffering, victory, and present glory matter more than a daily attempt to measure our importance against someone else.
When obedience feels difficult, return to what the Lord has done and what His Word says. Confess a wrong plainly, accept appropriate help, and continue in the next responsibility. Refuse both pride that says you need no help and despair that says faithfulness is no longer worth trying.
Jesus endured the cross for the joy set before Him. We should not treat His sacrifice as a simple motivational example; He is the Saviour whose work we could never accomplish. Belonging to Him gives His people reason to keep going with patient trust.
Keep the passage in context
Hebrews calls believers to endurance by directing their attention to Jesus, who endured the cross and is seated at God's right hand. His example and saving work give the race its proper focus.
