The Book Returned with Sand

Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.
Romans 13:7 KJV

Sophie borrowed a field guide from the school library for a beach visit. She promised to keep it safe, but the bag holding it fell onto the sand while she was searching for shells. Several grains worked their way between the pages.
At home she shook the book quickly and placed it beside her schoolbag. She hoped the remaining sand would not be noticed. The cover looked fine, and she wanted to finish sorting the shells before supper.
Then Sophie remembered the next child who would borrow the guide. The book belonged to a shared collection, and her promise concerned more than getting it back through the library door. She asked Mother how to clean it safely without damaging the pages.
They used a gentle brush and checked the spine carefully. A little stain remained near the bottom edge. Sophie told the librarian about it when she returned the book. The librarian appreciated the explanation and checked whether further care was needed.
Sophie did not enjoy reporting the stain, but she left knowing that the person responsible for the book had accurate information. She also began using a closed folder inside her bag when carrying borrowed materials outdoors.
Later, she saw another child enjoying the same field guide at a reading table. The book had continued doing its useful work because people cared for it between borrowers. Sophie was glad she had not treated returning it as a way to hand her problem to someone else unnoticed.
God's Word calls us to give what is due. The passage speaks broadly about obligations, and its truth reaches the ordinary promises we make to people. Respect for another person's property includes care, honest reporting, and a willingness to help repair damage when appropriate. Sophie could not guarantee that no accident would ever happen. She could become dependable in the way she responded afterward. The sand was a small thing, but her response showed whether her promise had substance beyond the pleasant words she spoke when she first wanted to borrow the book.
Keep the passage in context
Paul instructs believers to render what is due, including honor and respect. Responsible conduct takes obligations to others seriously rather than treating them as optional when inconvenient.
