The Forgotten Seedlings

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.

Luke 16:10 KJV

This is an original fictional illustration, not a historical report or an added Bible event.

The school greenhouse held trays of seedlings for the spring fair. Marcus volunteered to check them during the week because he hoped to be chosen to lead the garden team later. He liked the sound of being responsible for an important project.

On his first day he watered carefully and wrote a neat note in the logbook. On the second he hurried through because his friends were waiting. By Thursday he had stopped checking the small trays in the corner. He assumed they were getting enough water when he sprayed the larger plants.

Friday morning, several corner trays looked dry and weak. The teacher asked Marcus to walk through his routine with her. He realized that the plants he overlooked were the ones least visible from the door. The responsibility was smaller than leading the whole team, but it was already showing where his attention went.

Together they moved the trays into a clearer arrangement and marked which ones needed different care. Marcus admitted that he had been thinking more about the future title than the present job. The teacher gave him a chance to continue with closer guidance.

Over the next weeks he checked every tray, even when nobody was waiting to read his notes. Some damaged seedlings recovered, and some did not. Marcus did not erase the earlier mistake from the logbook. It helped him remember why careful attention mattered.

Jesus' words call us to faithfulness where we already have responsibility. We should not assume that a larger role will automatically make us more dependable. The habits we practise in small things tend to travel with us.

Marcus still hoped to lead the garden team someday. He began preparing by caring for the plants already entrusted to him. A title could not water a dry tray, and ambition could not replace the daily check. The quiet corner of the greenhouse became a better place to grow as a leader than the proud picture he had been carrying of himself at the front of the group.

Keep the passage in context

Jesus teaches faithfulness in small matters as a measure of trustworthiness in greater ones. Our treatment of ordinary responsibilities reveals something real about our character.
