The Page before the Promise

These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
Acts 17:11 KJV

Isabelle found a short message online that used a Bible verse to promise success in every plan. The picture behind it showed a mountain sunrise, and the words sounded encouraging. She copied the reference into her notebook for a school presentation.
Before she used it, her father asked her to read the whole passage. Isabelle found the chapter and began several verses earlier. The setting was more specific than the short message suggested. It did not say that every idea she preferred would succeed simply because she believed strongly enough.
She felt disappointed because the short version was easier to remember. Father explained that God's promises did not become less valuable when understood correctly. Trusting Scripture meant receiving its actual meaning rather than stretching it around every wish.
At church, the lesson described the Bereans examining the Scriptures. Isabelle liked that they were eager to hear while still checking what they were taught. They did not have to choose between being teachable and being careful.
She revised her presentation. Instead of promising that faith removed every difficulty, she explained the passage's real setting and the truth it taught. She also showed how reading the surrounding verses had helped her avoid a mistaken claim.
Afterward, a classmate asked whether she was worried about admitting that her first interpretation was wrong. Isabelle said learning the truth was more important than protecting the first version. She was glad she had checked before passing the mistake to others.
God's Word deserves patient reading. An attractive picture, familiar speaker, or encouraging sentence does not make every use of a verse accurate. We should examine the words, the speaker, the audience, and the surrounding passage. This habit is an act of respect for Scripture. Isabelle still enjoyed collecting verses, but she began keeping their context with them. The page before the promise and the page after it could help her hear what God actually said, which was a stronger foundation than any message she had improved to fit her own plans.
Keep the passage in context
The Bereans received the message eagerly and searched the Scriptures daily to examine whether it was true. Willingness to learn belongs with careful attention to God's written Word.
