The Small Pin on the Map

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Acts 1:8 KJV
This is an original fictional illustration, not a historical report or an added Bible event.
The church displayed a large map showing places where missionaries served. Ethan liked looking at the farthest pins and imagining long flights, different languages, and unfamiliar streets. He thought witnessing was something important people did in distant places.
One Sunday a missionary described ordinary conversations, patient language learning, and the need to explain the gospel clearly. Much of the work sounded quieter than Ethan had imagined. The missionary spoke about people by name and reminded the church that the message concerned Jesus Christ, not the excitement of travel.
During the following week, Ethan's friend asked why his family went to church. Ethan began with the games and the people he enjoyed. Then he remembered that those things were not the center of the gospel. He explained simply that Jesus is the Son of God, that He died for our sins and rose again, and that salvation is received through faith in Him.
His friend listened and asked something Ethan did not know how to answer. Ethan admitted that and offered to ask a trusted grown-up who could help them look at the Bible. He did not invent an answer to appear knowledgeable.
At the map the next Sunday, Ethan found the place where they lived. It did not have a dramatic distance attached to it. It did have neighbors, classmates, and families who needed the same Saviour proclaimed by the missionaries overseas.
Acts 1 records Christ's commission and the Spirit's power for witness. We should never reduce that work to confidence in our own speaking ability. Christians depend upon the Lord and tell the truth He has given. A child can speak honestly and seek wise help without pretending to know everything.
Ethan continued caring about the distant pins. He also began noticing the people close enough to share a desk, a game, or a walk home. The gospel was not waiting for him at the end of a future flight. The truth about Christ already deserved a faithful, loving witness in the place where God had put him today.
Keep the passage in context
The risen Lord commissions His disciples to be His witnesses through the power of the Holy Ghost. The spread of the gospel depends on His power and concerns the truth about Jesus Christ.
