The Practice Log

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.

Proverbs 6:6-8 KJV

This is an original fictional illustration, not a historical report or an added Bible event.

Sienna wanted to play the violin in the school concert. She liked the idea of standing with the group in a neat row, and she chose a bright folder for her music. The practice chart looked good on the refrigerator.

During the first week, she filled it honestly. During the second, she began writing ten minutes on days when she had only opened the case. She told herself that she would make up the time before the next lesson. The folder and chart still made her feel as though she was preparing.

At rehearsal, Sienna lost her place halfway through the piece. The other players continued while she searched for the right line. Her teacher did not scold her in front of everyone. Afterward, she asked Sienna to show what she had been practising at home.

Sienna admitted that the chart was not accurate. Together they made a smaller plan she could actually follow. She would practise one difficult section for five careful minutes, then play a part she enjoyed. The teacher asked her to record what she really did instead of what she wished she had done.

Some evenings Sienna still wanted to skip it. She learned to take out the violin before choosing a game. Progress came slowly through repeated attention, and she could hear the difficult notes becoming clearer.

At the concert she made one small mistake and recovered. She knew that her improvement had come from the quiet work behind her, not from the attractive folder or the numbers written on the chart.

God's Word teaches diligence through an ordinary creature preparing for a real need. We should not confuse looking ready with doing the work. Honest preparation leaves room for rest, help, and small beginnings. Sienna did not need to pretend she was an expert. She needed to be truthful about where she was and faithful with the next few minutes of practice. A modest plan carried out carefully served her better than an impressive chart filled with work that never happened.

Keep the passage in context

Proverbs uses the ant's steady preparation to expose laziness. Diligence attends to useful work without waiting for constant pressure from someone else.
