The Score That Nobody Checked

Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.
Proverbs 12:22 KJV

The quiz scoreboard hung on the classroom door. Each team checked its own answers and reported a total. Caleb's team needed twelve points to move into first place, and Caleb was the one holding the answer sheet.
They had eleven. One answer was almost right, and he could hear his friends celebrating behind him. The teacher was helping another group across the room. Caleb imagined writing twelve on the slip, handing it in, and enjoying the cheers. Nobody was likely to look closely at a single point.
He read the answer again. His team had named the wrong river. It was not a spelling mistake or an answer the teacher might reasonably accept. Caleb put eleven on the slip and carried it to the front desk.
When the scoreboard changed, his friends stopped celebrating. One asked why he had not counted the almost-right answer. Caleb explained what they had written. The friend argued that other teams probably stretched their scores. Caleb did not know whether that was true. He knew what was on their own paper.
At lunch, he still felt disappointed. Honesty had not produced a surprising victory, and the team in first place remained ahead. Caleb opened his lunch box quietly until another teammate sat beside him. She said she was glad their score was real. They began planning how to practise for the next quiz.
That afternoon Caleb asked the teacher to explain the river question. He drew the correct river on a map and noticed where their answer had gone wrong. The honest score gave them something useful to learn instead of a false result to protect.
God's Word does not make truthfulness depend on whether it brings applause. Caleb could enjoy a victory if his team earned one, and he could face a disappointing result without adding deceit. The single point seemed small, but it revealed a real choice about the kind of person he was becoming. A good result is worth having. A truthful heart is worth keeping when the result is not the one we wanted.
Keep the passage in context
Proverbs contrasts dishonest speech with faithful conduct. Truth matters before the Lord even when nobody else is able to check a claim.
