The Trophy That Could Not Pay
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Eli brought home a trophy and set it beside the lamp he had broken. He hoped his winning season might help everyone forget the damage. His mother congratulated him on his effort, then reminded him that a trophy could not repair a lamp.
Good deeds cannot cancel our sins either. Ephesians 2 teaches that salvation is God's gift, not a reward for gathering enough good marks. Jesus Christ paid for our sins through His death and rose again. Faith rests in Him, not in a record we have built.
Eli still needed to tell the truth and help with the damage. In the Christian life, obedience matters too. It follows salvation; it does not purchase it. Put your confidence in Christ instead of collecting reasons you think God ought to accept you.
Keep the passage in context
Paul first describes our need as sinners and then explains God's mercy. Salvation is His gift, received through faith, not earned by works. Good works follow new life in Christ; they do not buy it.
