Truth Without a Sharp Edge
A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.

Proverbs 15:1 does not tell you to win every disagreement. It tells you to pay attention to the answer you give. Words can carry a true concern and still be used cruelly.
You might need to tell a friend that a joke hurt or explain that a sibling took your things. Speak about the action without choosing the most painful insult you know. A quiet voice and clear words often make it easier for someone to listen.
Another person may stay angry even when you respond wisely. That does not make your obedience useless. God sees your response. If someone threatens or frightens you, get help from a trusted adult. Gentleness never means you must keep an unsafe situation secret.
Keep the passage in context
Proverbs contrasts wise and foolish speech. A gentle answer can quiet an argument, while hurtful words feed anger. This is wise instruction for our response, not a guarantee that another person will behave peacefully.
