Words You Can Stand Behind

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.

Psalm 34:13 KJV

A sentence can travel farther than you expect. The joke told quietly may be repeated loudly. A guess can become a rumor once someone hears it as a fact. God's Word teaches us to take responsibility for what leaves our mouths.

Before repeating a claim, consider whether you know it is true and whether passing it along serves a good purpose. You do not need to entertain the group with another person's private difficulty. You can report a real concern to the proper adult without turning it into a story for everyone nearby.

Truth also matters when you explain your own behavior. Leaving out a detail to create a false impression is different from giving a clear, honest account. The Lord sees the purpose behind the words.

If you have spoken wrongly, correct the matter with the people affected as far as you responsibly can. Then practise a different response. A careful tongue is not silent about every problem. It learns to speak what is truthful and useful, with respect for God and for the person who will hear it.

Keep the passage in context

David calls those who fear the LORD to keep their tongues from evil and their lips from deceit. Reverence for God should shape truthful, careful speech.
