A Calm Time for a Serious Pattern
Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.
The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way: but the folly of fools is deceit.
Proverbs 14:8 KJV
A recurring problem deserves more attention than a hurried exchange in the doorway. If the same conflict returns each week, the couple may need to examine the pattern rather than argue only about the latest example.
Choose a calm time and describe observable actions. Explain the effect on the household and the change that would help. Listen for practical obstacles you may have missed. Clear information makes a better foundation than labels about the other person's character.
Agree on one realistic adjustment and a time to review it. If the pattern involves serious dishonesty, addiction, intimidation, or abuse, seek qualified help and appropriate protection. Some situations cannot be responsibly handled through a private promise alone.
Prudence looks at where a way is leading. Ask the Lord to help you see your own habits accurately as well as your spouse's. A workable plan may seem less satisfying than winning an argument, but it can produce more useful change. Marriage needs patient attention to repeated conduct, especially the conduct that has become so familiar that neither person expects anything different anymore.
Keep the passage in context
The proverb connects prudence with understanding one's way. Wisdom examines the direction of conduct rather than being misled by self-deception.
