The Soft Answer Has a Clear Meaning

A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.
Proverbs 15:1 KJV
A soft answer can still say that a bill must be addressed, a promise was broken, or a behavior cannot continue. Gentleness is not the same as vagueness. It gives a clear message without adding unnecessary injury.
Lower the volume and make the concern specific. Explain what happened and what needs to change. Avoid sarcasm, which often forces the other person to defend against contempt before they can consider the actual issue.
You cannot guarantee a calm response by choosing perfect words. Each person remains responsible for their own conduct. If the situation is threatening, prioritize safety and obtain help. This proverb should never be used to blame a mistreated person for failing to speak gently enough.
In the ordinary tensions of shared life, a soft answer is a useful choice within your control. The Lord can help you make it even when irritation has supplied a louder alternative. Speak firmly where needed and kindly wherever possible. A truthful sentence delivered with restraint gives the conversation a better chance to become useful than a harsh sentence chosen mainly to make your anger felt.
Keep the passage in context
The proverb describes the calming effect of a soft answer and the anger stirred by grievous words. Gentleness concerns the manner of response while truth remains necessary.
