A Gift without a Secret Cost

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.

Proverbs 22:7 KJV

A generous surprise can carry a hidden burden when it is purchased through debt the other spouse does not know about. The gift arrives brightly wrapped while the obligation waits quietly behind it.

Give within the truth of your circumstances. Love does not require a purchase that undermines agreed responsibilities or creates a secret your spouse must later absorb. A thoughtful, modest gift can express care without making next month harder.

Discuss borrowing carefully. Some circumstances involve legitimate needs and complex choices, so avoid simplistic judgments about other families. Within your own home, understand the terms, the cost, and the responsibility before agreeing to an obligation.

If debt has become overwhelming, bring the full account into the light and seek trustworthy financial counsel. Blame alone will not establish a workable plan. The Lord values truth, and a shared view of the situation makes responsible action possible. Let gifts remain gifts rather than disguises for anxiety. A marriage benefits from generosity that respects the future as well as delighting the person receiving something today.

Keep the passage in context

The proverb observes the dependence created by borrowing. It calls for sober attention to obligations rather than treating debt as consequence-free access to desired things.
