A Purchase Worth Discussing First

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established.

Proverbs 15:22 KJV

A purchase can be affordable in one person's mind and alarming in the other's. The difference may involve information, priorities, or a promise neither person realized the other was relying upon.

Agree on a sensible threshold for discussing larger expenses. The goal is mutual trust, not permission as a form of control. Both spouses should have clear access to appropriate financial information and a voice in decisions that affect the household.

Explain the purpose before defending the preference. A needed repair, a useful tool, and a desired upgrade may all look similar on a receipt while serving different purposes. Listening can reveal an alternative that meets the real need at a better time or cost.

Wise counsel may also come from someone qualified outside the home. Seek it when the decision is complex, and remain alert to advice shaped mainly by a sales commission. The Lord has given us the ability to plan together. Use it before an avoidable surprise becomes another argument. A conversation held before the purchase often costs less than the distrust created by an explanation offered afterward.

Keep the passage in context

The proverb commends counsel in establishing sound purposes. Shared wisdom can expose weaknesses in a plan before its consequences arrive.
