Enough for the Table
Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.
Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.
Proverbs 15:17 KJV
A simple supper can provide more peace than an expensive evening filled with resentment. The food matters, but it cannot carry the responsibility of making a marriage healthy. Love must be brought to the table by the people sitting there.
Be careful about expecting purchases to repair what needs an honest conversation. A gift may express genuine care, but it cannot replace confession, changed conduct, or dependable attention. Expensive surroundings do not make contempt less damaging.
Receive ordinary provision gratefully. Plan within your means, share the work, and make room to enjoy each other's company without comparing the meal to someone else's photograph. A modest home can contain real warmth.
Financial hardship still deserves practical attention. This verse does not ask struggling families to pretend that food, housing, or medical needs are unimportant. Seek appropriate assistance when needed. Its wisdom helps us keep priorities straight while working through those needs. The Lord values love and peace in the life we share. Tend those things today, even if the meal is plain and the budget leaves little room for anything extra.
Keep the passage in context
The proverb values love in a modest meal above abundance accompanied by hatred. The quality of relationships matters more than the appearance of plenty.
