Beyond the Outward Account
But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
1 Samuel 16:7 KJV
It is possible to make a household look well while leaving a spouse lonely within it. The home is tidy, the photographs are pleasant, and the private conversations have become short. Appearance can hide a need it cannot repair.
When Samuel saw Eliab, he was impressed by what he could see. God corrected that judgment. The LORD looks on the heart. Even an experienced prophet needed to be reminded that outward measures were incomplete.
I should not assume I know my spouse's heart as God does. I can ask, listen, and notice the difference between an outward smile and an honest conversation. Caring well requires more than maintaining the account other people see.
Make room for a truthful check-in without defending the appearance of your marriage. Ask how things really are and receive the answer patiently. Then act on what you learn. A home does not need to look flawless to be a place of faithful love. It needs people willing to attend to what appearances cannot tell them.
Keep the passage in context
God corrects Samuel's judgment of Eliab while choosing Israel's next king. Outward appearance does not give a complete measure of a person. The LORD knows the heart in a way human observers cannot.
