Mercy Changes the Way We Serve

Pride can follow us into service. We do a helpful thing and begin thinking that our spouse should now recognize how much better we are. The task was useful, but the heart has turned it into a platform.

Titus reminds believers that salvation did not come through works of righteousness we had done. God saved according to His mercy. The Holy Ghost gives new life, and we are justified by grace through Jesus Christ. There is no place for a redeemed sinner to boast as though he supplied the rescue.

That memory should make service at home gentler. I am not the superior person lowering myself to help. I am someone who has received mercy and now has an opportunity to show care. Good works follow grace; they do not purchase standing before God.

Do a needed task without adding a speech about your generosity. If responsibilities need discussion, discuss them honestly at a suitable time. Let service remain service instead of using it to claim moral rank. The gospel gives husband and wife the same ground for humility before the Saviour.
