Come to the Lord with the Real Need

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Hebrews 4:16 KJV

A couple may speak carefully about difficulties until the actual need almost disappears beneath the explanation. We describe pressure, circumstances, and misunderstandings while avoiding the fear or sin that needs honest attention.

The throne of grace is a place for real need. Christ has provided access, so believers do not have to make themselves sound stronger before coming to God. Reverence and honesty belong together.

Bring the situation before Him plainly, both personally and together when appropriate. Then respond to the truth He has already given in Scripture. An apology, a changed habit, or wise counsel may be part of the help needed.

Prayer should never be used to close a conversation your spouse still needs to have or to pressure agreement with your preference. Dependence upon God makes us more willing to obey truth, not less willing to hear it. Christ's priestly care gives a struggling household a sound place to turn. You can seek mercy and help without pretending the problem has already been solved or that you have managed the week more faithfully than you actually have.

Keep the passage in context

Because Jesus is the great High Priest, believers may approach the throne of grace for mercy and timely help. Confidence rests in Him.
