Keep a Personal Walk with God

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

Matthew 6:6 KJV

Shared spiritual habits are valuable, but marriage does not remove the need for a personal walk with God. A husband cannot believe, repent, or obey in place of his wife, and a wife cannot do those things in place of her husband.

Make room for quiet attention to the Lord. Read Scripture thoughtfully and speak to Him honestly. The purpose is fellowship and obedience, not acquiring evidence that you are the more spiritual person in the home.

Respect one another's need for appropriate time and concentration. Seasons of work, illness, or caring for children may require practical adjustments. A modest routine followed sincerely can be more useful than an impressive plan that does not fit the household's actual life.

Jesus warns against devotion arranged for an audience. Let private faithfulness shape public conduct. The person nearest you should receive the fruit of time spent with the Lord through greater honesty, patience, and love. You do not need to announce every spiritual habit. Walk with Christ sincerely, encourage your spouse kindly, and allow His Word to reach the ordinary choices that only the two of you will see.

Keep the passage in context

Jesus teaches prayer directed sincerely to the Father rather than performed for public praise. Secret devotion guards against using religious practice as a display.
