Companionship Was God's Good Idea

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.

Genesis 2:18 KJV

Genesis presents companionship as something God understood before Adam could provide it for himself. Woman was not an afterthought of lesser worth. The Lord supplied a fitting companion within His good creation.

Marriage should therefore be approached with gratitude and respect. A spouse is a person to know and love, not a useful addition expected to absorb every unfinished task or emotional need.

Make time for companionship itself. Learn what concerns your spouse, enjoy appropriate interests together, and remain curious about the person whose routines have become familiar. Years of shared life do not remove the need for attention.

This passage honors marriage without teaching that unmarried people have less dignity or a less useful life before God. Within the marriage He has given you, receive the relationship as a responsibility worth tending. Sin has made love harder than it was in Eden, so we need Christ's grace daily. Let gratitude for God's design reach the way you speak, listen, and serve. Companionship grows where a person is treated as a valued partner rather than as part of the household equipment.

Keep the passage in context

Before sin enters the account, God identifies Adam's need for a suitable helper. The creation of woman belongs to His good design for human companionship and marriage.
