Good Works from a Settled Gospel
Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.
This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.
Titus 3:8 KJV
The order matters. God saves by mercy, and those who believe are called to live usefully. If we reverse that order, every act of service becomes another attempt to make ourselves acceptable.
Let the gospel stay settled in your marriage. Kindness, faithfulness, and generosity are good because they honor the Lord and benefit people. They are not payments added to Christ's sufficient sacrifice.
This frees service from constant scorekeeping. You can help your spouse without treating the task as a deposit that must be repaid immediately. Shared responsibilities should still be fair, but fairness need not become a running contest over who deserves more admiration.
Choose a useful act of care and carry it out with gratitude. Repair what needs attention, keep a promise, or meet a practical need. Titus calls these things profitable because real people receive their benefit. A clear gospel does not make good works unnecessary. It places them on the right foundation. The grace that saves us also gives us reason to become dependable, thoughtful people in the life we share each day.
Keep the passage in context
After explaining salvation by God's mercy rather than works, Paul urges believers to maintain good works. Christian conduct flows from grace instead of earning it.
